Fusing salute string safely

WindowLicka

Recommended Posts

I would like to know how I could safely run a string of m-80 type salutes to continuously, one after another, blow, until the last one has blown, without blowing the next one out?

I have a 65' roll of visco and roughly 50 9/16"X3" salutes that I'd like to run sort-of Italian style. To blow one after another they need to be fused correctly so the explosion from salute #1 doesn't stop # 2,3,4,ect from being detonated. How do the Italians wire up their to blow like the video I'm gonna post directly following this post?

Nobody is going to answer you, M-80's and all salutes like that are illegal in the USA and the reason that so many pyros are given a bad name. Time for you to move on Licka...

Sorry, Dag, can you please explain your position in a little more depth? The mascleta is a time honored tradition in Europe and I'm not sure what the problem is with trying to replicate it on a smaller scale.

What's the difference between a 3" salute and an M-80?

Furthermore, could you please tell me how M-80s are illegal in the US?

Sorry, Dag, can you please explain your position in a little more depth? The mascleta is a time honored tradition in Europe and I'm not sure what the problem is with trying to replicate it on a smaller scale.

Mascleta are e-matched together for the larger ones, quick matched together for the small ones and use an under-powered flash, do not use hard tubes and have minimal confinement. Visco is not a way to replicate them and I have been around this big blue ball enough to know when someone is making bangers.

What's the difference between a 3" salute and an M-80?

1.3 display fireworks when commercially made with accompanying UN number and a banned (by name) .50 caliber simulation device used by the military. Banned since 1966 in the USA.

Furthermore, could you please tell me how M-80s are illegal in the US?

Wikkipedia: Due to potential property damages and bodily harm that can be caused by M-80s, Class C fireworks—now known as consumer fireworks (class 1.4G), as opposed to display fireworks (which were Class B, and are now 1.3G)[5]— civilians require a license, issued by federal authorities, for pyrotechnic devices containing a charge in excess of 50 milligrams of pyrotechnic flash powder. In 1966, M-80s and cherry bombs were restricted by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the Child Protection Act of 1966. In 1975, U.S. federal regulations were passed to limit all consumer-grade fireworks available for general sale to the public in the United States to a maximum of 50 milligrams flash powder, down from a previous maximum of 200 milligrams. However Firecrackers mounted onto a rocket stick, or other aerial firework devices, such as rockets, Roman candles, and cakes etc., may still have significantly more, up to 130 mg, or more, depending on device and classification, and can be legally purchased by any American civilian citizen.

Those holding a federal explosives license, which can be obtained and is issued by the local ATF authorities may potentially be allowed to purchase m-80. Federal and state officials sometimes distribute them to farmers to scare away wildlife encroaching on their crops.

Thats NOT what you are making....

What do you mean? I was wondering how safely and correctly fuse together a string of salutes that would sound similar to the Italian style of fireworks finale. For you to jump on here and act as if I'm some kid wanting to build a damn bomb or like the mere possession of an m-80 STYLE salute is something taboo here and sounding a call not answer my question (which I dropped in the safety section for a damn reason), is coming across kinda hypocritical.

Look, I plan on having a big finale and here in California everything but fountains are pretty much illegal. But you know what? The cops don't respond to calls for a string of salutes. You know what the respond to here, people shooting off 2000 bottle rockets each with report. Or anything going skyward makes homeowners nervous because they cause fires from time to time.

I unfortunately didn't quite get my rockets to where I feel safe enough to shoot ANY off this 4th so that leaves me with the best fountain and gerb show I can do for my family. That and a salute string finale. Who are you to judge me and act like I'm doing something wrong? I thought this place was called AMETEUR pyro forum, not, 'only if you have a batf license' forum.

I don't know what you thought I was asking but a few posts down the title referred to a blown off thumb. This is what I intend to avoid for myself and me coming here a skiing how to fuse up the 50 salutes I already have made is me being as straight forward as it gets. I posted a damn video of a finale I think is way out of my 50 little salute range ,but it shows the precise effect on a much larger scale.

So due to all that I just layed out for you, where am I breaking the forum rules or how did I shit on your uppity no ground salute values?

Because if I did, my bad! But I honestly didn't have you or your professional license only buttocks in mind when I asked for help doing something so in line with pyrotechnics I don't know where else I would have asked it? Or should I go to totse.com with that line of questioning?

Gimme a break!

Can I ask what you think I would do with said knowledge of how to string salutes so the former salute doesn't stop the latter salutes from finishing a 50 salute string?

I seen a guy asking how to mix up 3000g. of flash powder and you wanna bust my balls over this. My gosh, what has this world come to? The pretention for prevention is running wild on this one....think?

It it's illegal you shouldn't be talking about doing it.

Ground salutes probably aren't such a good idea in suburban neighborhoods.

These type of actions tend to cause people to look down on amateur pyrotechnics, so you're giving us a black eye. You are boasting about breaking the law on a public forum.

I thought this place was called AMETEUR pyro forum, not, 'only if you have a batf license' forum.

Many amateurs are licensed. Having a license doesn't make you a professional. That you think otherwise indicates your naive and immature attitudes on the subject.

Salutes and reports are normal and excepted type of fireworks. i thing you were very quick to turn instaprick. There are thousands of types of "fireworks". If they are illegal, as most are, to be constructed.... Oh well, to each his own, as long as spectators are far nuff.

everyone is just looking out for your safety, and for the security of the hobby (boomers don't put the art in good light, generally). Don't take it too harshly, and please try to understand. The word "M-80" is a huge trigger word, for obvious reasons, it almost implies intent to distribute, which of course is VERY illegal. But at the core, there is no difference between a ground salute and an m-cracker.

If you are quick fusing multiple devices, a couple feet between should keep it from shredding itself. My piped match is in 36" lengths, so I would probably use 18" between each effect, for convenience.

This video shows a couple different approaches to the same effect, an experienced pyro should be able to discern the details from a couple views. This is just a fusing method, whatever you decide to light with it is up to you.

Please be safe

It's very clear that you both don't understand the reasons that I posted what I did, let me clarify:

-If you come on here looking for advice to make boomers and I assist you, you kill yourself or others, where will LEO's go looking? So you may be across the pond, how do I know? Tell me you are from another country, you may be from California! What do you think the widow is going to do? Let this pass? Nope, they will turn the information over to the cops and after all is said and done, a personal suit will be filed.

-The ATF has no issues with you or me making fireworks, the states may and they do and even if you say boomers are fireworks, they are still the ones that give pyros the bad rap, get laws passed etc, blow off hands, etc. etc. etc.

Maserface posted a great video on mascleta, try to make them the old world way, Im cool with that but please, dont jack your face at me all indignant with 7 and 35 posts! We have NO idea what kind of person you are, you may be the guy on the corner making and selling M-80's, how would we know?

Guilty as charged, instaprick, hypocrite while you schidt on my uppity no ground salute values. None of that is actually true though, I LOVE mascleta and if you had just asked the question as to how to make them in the traditional way instead of sounding like the street corner boomer, I would jump right in!

Good luck, I hope you have a great 4th of July, stay safe.

An M-80 is far too big for a mascletta, Visco is the wrong fuse for mascletta. Fusing is done with Spanish quick match which responds to tying and binding to introduce small delays in a way that Chinese match does NOT.

An M -80 is in most cases big enough to cause damage and making them in bulk will certainly cause damage to your reputation -maybe run you up against ATF and other three letter agencies.

How full of yourself are you really Dag?? So now it's just a question of "speaking" to you the way you want. Everyone should be able to ask a question and be gently steered correct, or steered away with the reasoning. Try telling a real person what not to do and see how fast they do it. I've read close to a hundred of your posts and generally agree with your opinion, but I sometimes think it feels like you think others "must" listen to you because you've screwed up. Not fair, let people grow

asaster think you are picking a fight your not going to win..... if he new what he was doing, he would not have to ask. if he doesn't know what he is doing he shouldn't ask . these are not for the beginner.. when he grows (your words) enough he will not need to ask, building other things will led him to it. he will have his own base to draw from .

I'm not "fighting", I'm sticking up for a human being that was, in my eyes, being slammed over his post. I would do that in daily life and here is no different. I think we could have asked a few questions instead of lording over them because of terminology. It really amazes me that it's no prob to tell a guy how much flash he could safely mix?!? 20g to 2kg were the answers from all you experts.

And FYI, it's not hard to make a smaller version of that video with visco fast, effect fuses, paper pipe, small salutes etc. building up to a finale. I do it yearly.

I am pretty full of myself, I expect everyone to speak to me the way I want. It's true, I am full of fear that people that wish to make and sell or use very dangerous bangers will die or kill others, worse yet, maim others or themselves. I expect everyone to speak to me about fireworks and not k3wlz, bangers, or thumpers.

Did I screw up or did I draw the short straw? "But for the grace of God, go I." is the quote made by many that make and made BP and didn't get burnt. Wanna give me a paper-cut and pour lemon juice in it?

I WANT to let people grow, not use a thinly veiled chain of k3wl banger post about how to make pounds of flash immediately followed by how do I string a bunch of M-80's together with visco?

Asaster, we have seen HUNDREDS of n00bs come here and ask about flash, we are not chumps or punks, we actually care and know the signs. Like it or not, we will and will always knee jerk first and back off second. Am I picking on WindowLicka? OH HELL YES! I want him to be safe and he is working his damnedest to blow something off his body!

Ok I understand your motivation, and as I said, generally agree with you. You react the way you do in respect to fireworks but I react the way I do when I feel someone being bullied. I also believe that it's ok if kids eat dirt, touch a bumblebee, or fall off a bike. I'm not trying to justify anything but I believe the way we speak to each other in type does not read the same as we want and usually sounds rude. / sorry

It is certainly better to ask than try to wing it or use less than reputable resources. I don't think anyone is picking on anyone really, or at least not relentlessly. This is already sort of a touchy subject, and the term m-80 doesn't do any favors to this situation. They carry an extra stigma with them. Safety is of paramount here. I don't care if feelings get hurt, or egos get bruised. Salutes are a very minor part of pyro. They can be called normal and accepted, but it is still not something that should or needs to be messed with without experience. Flash certainly has its use at times, but for salutes it draws extra unwanted attention. Trying to pop off 50 or more, in an unstoppable fashion doesn't help out the poster, the forum, or the hobby. I wish people could handle everything responsibly, but that is not the case, and advice and suggestions must tempered at times because of it.

The real situation is that the OP probably does not have the experience, and definitely does not appear to have the materials to do what he'd like.

Also for what it's worth, I'm getting uncomfortable with the extent and frequency of flash focused threads. I haven't been around as much lately due to real life obligations, but this needs to settle down.

Who the hell said I live in a suburban area? California doesn't=suburb. Plenty of nice private property in the country here. Like I said before, it's things going skyward that gets the wrong attention here, unless your licensed and being paid to do it. Salutes don't burn down houses (usually). Skyrockets shot wrong do!

everyone is just looking out for your safety, and for the security of the hobby (boomers don't put the art in good light, generally). Don't take it too harshly, and please try to understand. Lets be clear here, I don't recall asking about making any amount of flash ever. Maybe I did and just plain don't remember but I'm being confused with some Kewl or however you put it kid, and that isn't me.

I have never called a salute a boomer a cracker or any other kewl kid crap your making me out being. I say salute, period. The fact you have a problem with helping me out shows you must be on yours. I don't plan on asking for help here anymore so you can find someone else to classify as a noob and bash instead of respectfully steer to the correct outcome.

And we don't have to worry about the 50 salute string anymore....I sold them on the corner like they were crack rocks!

That was a joke in case you uptight arseholes don't do that here.

We all know how people add to things like my 50 salutes is really more the 23 salute range and I gathered FROM MASERFACE'S VIDEO that they may be a tad strong for fusing in the fashion I was thinking of.

or like the mere possession of an m-80 STYLE salute is something taboo here

It pretty much is. And honestly, even tho everything i do is illegal, since i'm not in the US, and i can see why someone would want to do something like m-80's for salutes, i can also see why US pyro's react so strongly against them.

That was a joke in case you uptight arseholes don't do that here.

We do jokes, a lot of them at that, but we at least try to make them funny.

Look. I see where you are coming from, but the reality is that you are wanting to do one of the most basics things in pyro, chain firing, and you shouldn't have to ask. On top of that, you really did ask about "m-80's" which in the US has been shunned by pyros for the last 20 years or more. And finally you want to combine these to make the most dangerous kind of firework on the planet. A chain reaction of events that once started cant be stopped, happens at ground level, and is nothing but explosions. I really cant blame people for getting upset.

But i also agree with Mum. It's WAY better to ask if in doubt, then to get hurt, killed, or worse, hurt, or kill someone else. In the context i'm not even going to care that much about property damage.

B!
